The Athletics announced on March 11 (Japan time March 12) that 19-year-old Shohei Morii has been promoted to the Single-A Stockton Ports of the California League and will begin playing this week. Morii is currently attempting a two-way role, having previously played in the Arizona Complex League (ACL) at the rookie level.
During his time at Toho High School in East Tokyo, Morii hit a total of 45 home runs and recorded a fastball of up to 153 km/h (95 mph). He signed a minor league contract with the Athletics in January 2025. MLB’s official website has featured Morii, noting his upcoming debut and his dual role as a pitcher and second baseman.
