Barcelona’s summer search for a left winger has encountered a major obstacle. Although club sporting director Deco has held talks with the agent of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that a deal is highly unlikely.
Barça had initially prioritized a permanent move for Marcus Rashford, but that transfer now seems improbable, forcing the club to explore other targets. This brought Gordon into the picture, and the recent meeting between his representative and Deco sparked speculation about a potential move. However, Romano indicates that the 25-year-old England international would be “prohibitively expensive” for the Catalan side.
Gordon has enjoyed an impressive season with Newcastle, netting 17 goals and providing 5 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions. But his contract at St. James’ Park runs until 2030, with a release clause reportedly set at between €75 million and €85 million. That price tag is well beyond Barcelona’s current financial capacity. Moreover, Bayern Munich and several Premier League clubs are also tracking Gordon, adding further complexity to the race.
Romano reveals that Barcelona have already shifted focus to other alternatives. The La Liga champions are now evaluating young academy graduates Victor Munoz and Jan Virgili, both of whom have La Liga experience and are seen as promising talents. The club is attempting to address its wide-attacking needs in a more cost-effective manner.
