Pablo Fornals etched his name into Real Betis history by scoring the decisive goal that secured the club’s return to the Champions League after more than two decades. The Spanish midfielder’s powerful right-footed strike against Elche on Tuesday night sealed a 2-1 victory, propelling Manuel Pellegrini’s side back among Europe’s elite.
Speaking to DAZN after the match, Fornals reflected on the moment: “Throughout today, I had several signs. Some close friends had dreamed that I would be the one to score. When I controlled the ball, I knew it was going in—I didn’t expect it to be so beautiful, but I knew the ball would find the net.”
The 2025-26 season has been a rollercoaster for Betis, with highs and lows testing the team’s resolve. “It’s been a campaign with good moments and difficult times. I think everyone deserved this. As the manager told us from Matchday 1, our journey started there, and thank God it culminates today with two league fixtures still remaining,” Fornals added.
The significance of Champions League football was not lost on the Castellón native. “It means a lot. For the first time, I’ll compete in the Champions League with this club, which rescued me when I was in a dark place. I will always be grateful to them.”
Fornals also dedicated the achievement to the Betis faithful: “Let them enjoy it—this night belongs to them.” The victory marks a historic milestone for the Verdiblancos, who last graced the Champions League in the early 2000s. Fornals’ goal not only secured qualification but also cemented his status as the team’s most influential player this season.
