Just days ago, USA Today released a report highlighting the top high schools for student-athletes in Maryland. A school from the Eastern Shore secured a notable spot on the list of 25 institutions.
Based on a comprehensive analysis conducted by Niche—which evaluated criteria including feedback from students and parents, the number of sports programs offered, total state championships won, and student participation rates—Stephen Decatur High School was ranked among the elite. The school did not just make the Top 25; it climbed all the way into the Top 10, landing at No. 9.
This achievement comes on the heels of significant athletic success at Stephen Decatur. The school’s football team captured back-to-back MPSSAA state titles in 2023 and 2024. Its wrestling team dominated with five consecutive dual meet state championships from 2019 to 2024. The boys soccer team won a state title in 2025, while both the softball and boys lacrosse teams reached state finals in the same year.
Another Bayside Conference school, Kent Island, also earned a spot on the list, ranking at No. 8.
